UNLV interviewed Jon Scheyer

Ultimately UNLV promoted Kevin Kruger to be the next head coach after T.J. Otzelberger left for Iowa State this offseason. But Desiree Reed-Francois could have landed the man that will replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke.

According to The Athletic Jon Scheyer interviewed for the UNLV (and DePaul) head coaching job back in March. But Reed-Francois went with Kruger.

Scheyer fits Reed-Francois’ type. He is 33 years old, in the up and coming category of coaches. He has never been a head coach (like Kruger and football coach Marcus Arroyo).

Scheyer ended up in a great situation by getting passed over at UNLV and DePaul. And in Vegas we can unfairly compare his career of taking over one of the best programs in the country to Kruger’s rebuild.

This also gives some credence to Reed-Francois’ coaching search being an actual search and not just picking Kruger.

Back in March, Reed-Francois said on ESPN Las Vegas she interviewed 14-17 candidates for the job. Scheyer was apparently one of those.
